There is a known issue in Firefox preventing users from installing DuckDuckGo plugins. This issue should get fixed soon. In the meantime, follow the instructions under "While visiting a website" at http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Search%20bar (replacing YouTube with the DuckDuckGo homepage) to install DuckDuckGo.
To add DuckDuckGo to your Firefox address bar:
- Type "about:config" into the address bar.
- Search for "keyword.url".
- Change it to "https://duckduckgo.com/?q=".
- If you want instant-style search, change it instead to "https://duckduckgo.com/?q=!+".
To set DuckDuckGo as your homepage, drag this link to the home icon in your Firefox toolbar.
To make DuckDuckGo the search engine used when you select text and right click:
(Also calls up DuckDuckGo when the search box has been removed and keyboard shortcut CTRL+K is used.)
- Type "about:config" into the address bar.
- Search for "browser.search.defaultenginename".
- Change it to the name of the DuckDuckGo plugin you use, e.g. "DuckDuckGo (SSL)"
To replace Google with DuckDuckGo in Firefox's default homepage (about:home):
- Download and install the extension SQLite Manager.
- Go to Firefox > Web Developer > SQLite Manager.
- Click "(Select Profile Database)", choose "chromeappsstore.sqlite", and press "Go".
- Click "Tables" from the left pane and choose "webappsstore2".
- Open the "Browse & Search" tab, and change the value for the key "search-engine" to "{"name":"DuckDuckGo (SSL)","searchUrl":"https://duckduckgo.com/?q=_searchTerms_"}".
These extensions also use DuckDuckGo:
- FastestFox - you can highlight a word or phrase and get DuckDuckGo 0-click info.
- DDG + Google Suggest by Nathan Friedly (open source) - adds Google auto-complete.
